Event space striking a balance between heritage and contemporary.
Striking a balance between Tattersall's Club's rich traditions and the requirement for a contemporary touch is front of mind for Angela Spillane.
Studio Spillane's Principal Interior Designer is constantly mindful of incorporating both attributes as she sets about the task of reimagining the Tattersall's Club event space.
For the past five years Spillane and her team have redeveloped sections of the Club including The Conservatory, Health and Wellness Centre, Concierge, Business Centre and the Members' Dining Room.
Their current project is the Level 2 event space incorporating the Grand Ballroom, corridor and Business Centre.
The event space is nestled in the more contemporary building, along with the Conservatory and Health & Wellness Centre, which was originally designed by famous Brisbane architect Robin Gibson in the 7990s.
The original Members' Bar was created in a neoclassical style, while an Art Deco approach was adopted for the second building incorporating the Members' Dining Room.
Neoclassical architecture is a revival style that draws inspiration from the classical architecture of ancient Greece and Rome, featuring grandeur, simplicity and symmetry.
Art Deco is characterised by bold geometric shapes, luxurious materials and a sense of glamour and modernity.
"We have sought to really understand the current architecture when working through the detailing," Ms Spillane said.
"The Dining Room is Art Deco and then there is Neoclassical style in the Members' Bar - we needed to balance this.
"I really wanted to honour the existing building and Club, making it look beautiful and more contemporary yet still retaining a lot of the existing bones.
'The Club has a history of major renovations only every few decades and so the decisions made would be added to the story of a building with an already rich history."
Ms Spillane's favourite aspect of the redeveloped event rooms is the retained yet restyled coffered ceilings which will be complemented by beautiful new carpets and the original rich timber bars. Members will also enjoy access to the brand-new, fully refurbished Business Centre, designed to meet all professional needs.
Over the past two years of working with Tattersall's Club, I have been consciously drawing on existing traditions and heritage - making it a bit more contemporary as we go, rather than outright contrasting of the design styles," Ms Spillane said.
"During the whole redevelopment process a key consideration is really respecting the traditions that make Tattersall's Club."
Ms Spillane said another key aspect to the event space redevelopment was the incorporation of new technology with all of the event rooms fitted with new lighting, lighting control systems, audio visual (AV) equipment and a new AV control system.
"These will have 2025 specifications and are really core event technology requirements that are being updated," she said.
